Edge - Scrollkeeper of Starcross

I have made a new Edge for characters who come from the city of Starcross on Sky Island. Can someone advise me on whether its balanced and usable please?

Scrollkeeper of Starcross

Requirements: Novice

You were taken as a child and raised in the Great Library of Starcross.  Such familiarity with the knowledge contained within these books provided a fantastic education. This has benefits now in that you may select an additional number of Culture, Lore or Study Defining Interests equal to your Smarts die. These choices may be used to grant additional Languages.

I don't see that as being particularly broken in regards to defining interests. But that edge is stepping on another edge in regards to languages.  That edge is 'Linguist'. I recommend not adding the language part, and if they want more languages point them to Linguist.  Partly also if I remember that island has recently come back out of the veil? So maybe instead of allowing them to take straight up languages they can take ancient variants. The ancient variants would be unintelligible to a modern speaker (so they couldn't talk with speakers of those languages) but if they delved into an ancient tomb or found and ancient tome they could read it or start learning from it.

Recently come out of the veil? I was under the impression it had been out for a century or two (hence the population and its history). Unless of course you guys have changed something- in which case my campaign won't be J&L anyway

Well, recently is a relative term. Compared to say, the Kal Empire, Galea is fairly recent. But, the island is, based on your lore, one of the more recent lands to appear. If this is in error, please let us know.

As for the Edge, I think Chris is right on Languages. Linguist already provides this bonus. You could, I suppose maybe offer a small offset to the -2 Smarts penalty offered by Linguist? Chris, thoughts?

If they want to take this edge on top of linguist to offset the linguist -2 penalty then that's fine too. But my other suggestion of ancient variants is not a bad route either as I think most players wouldn't want to take two edges (this and linguist) for that benefit and the ancient languages would give them something that really sets them apart.
